Shilajit and Male Reproductive Health: A Look at the Research

Shilajit, the mineral-rich resin that seeps from high-mountain rock, has a long history of traditional use and a growing body of modern research. One area researchers have examined is male reproductive health. This article summarizes what one clinical study reported, along with context on how to read that kind of research.

What shilajit is

Shilajit is a naturally occurring resin rich in fulvic acid and trace minerals. Fulvic acid has been studied as a carrier molecule and for antioxidant activity, and shilajit’s mineral content is part of why it has drawn scientific interest. These are properties of shilajit as a substance, described in the published literature.

A clinical study on shilajit and sperm health

A peer-reviewed study, “Clinical evaluation of spermatogenic activity of processed Shilajit in oligospermia,” was published in the journal Andrologia in 2010 (Biswas TK et al.).

In the study, men with low sperm counts took processed shilajit (100 mg) twice daily for 90 days. Thirty-five participants enrolled and 28 completed the course. Researchers measured semen parameters, hormone levels (testosterone, LH and FSH) and a marker of oxidative stress in semen, before and after the 90 days.

The authors reported statistically significant improvements across several of these measures at the end of treatment compared with each participant’s own baseline, and noted that liver and kidney safety markers were unchanged at the dose studied.

How to read a study like this

A single study is a starting point, not the final word. A few things worth keeping in mind:

  • It was small — 28 people completed it — and the completed analysis did not include a separate placebo group.
  • It used a specific “processed” shilajit preparation at a specific dose; findings with one preparation don’t automatically carry over to others.
  • Reproductive health has many causes and inputs, and a study’s group averages don’t predict any one person’s experience.

If you have concerns about fertility or reproductive health, the right next step is a qualified healthcare professional who can evaluate your individual situation.
